conservation groups & Actions to take now

For the love of birds and wild places, here are several grassroots organizations I recommend supporting. I urge you also to find the nonprofits in your region and donate generously.

September 21st– Save the Roadless Rule from being repealed–43 million acres of public lands at stake.

September 30th- Defend the Blue Mountains from reckless logging and roading. Comment on the Forest Plan.

greater hells canyon council

This is the only nonprofit grassroots group dedicated to protect, connect, and restore one of the wildest and most important regions in the lower 48 states–5 million acres, from the high Wallowas to the deepest canyon in North America. I am on the board and can tell you the small staff is amazing–passionate, dedicated, and effective.

oregon wild

The statewide nonprofit group does fantastic positive work to protect the wilds on public lands, to advocate for wildlife, and partner with grassroots organizations. I’ve written essays for Oregon Wild and first joined up back in the 1970s!

bird alliance of oregon

A terrific organization that has led the way on protections for imperiled species like the Marbled Murrelet, and offers wonderful volunteer opportunities. You’ll find plenty of actions to take on behalf of wild birds and their homes.

great old broads for wilderness

This women-led organization dedicated to preserving wilderness and wildlands welcomes both “broads” and “bros” to be part of regional chapters (called broadbands). I’m on the leadership team of the Bitterbrush Broads representing central and eastern Oregon. We have fun!
