opal creek ancient forest Center celebration

I’m honored to be a guest speaker at the Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center’s annual gathering in Portland on the theme of “The River Runs Through Us.” I’ll include an excerpt about my return to Opal Creek from the Feathered Forest chapter called “Saving Refugia.”

Here are details on the event from Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center:

You’re invited to join Opal Creek’s 2026 Evening for Opal Creek! Please join a dedicated community of supporters in celebration of recent successes, as well as the 30th anniversary of the passage of the Oregon Resource Conservation Act of 1996: Opal Creek Wilderness and Scenic Recreation Area. The very essence of Opal Creek AFC today stems from the incredible passion and effort of many hundreds of individuals who worked hard to bring about this important legislative decision – let’s celebrate them and how The River Runs Through Us!

Come and hear about our challenges and successes as we work our way toward a new Jawbone and Opal Creek future. Your evening features Vibrant Table hors d’oeuvres & desserts, beverages, conversation and our Opal Creek fundraiser.

When: Thursday, October 8, 6pm (doors open at 5:45pm)

Where: Ecotrust Bldg., Billy Frank Jr. Room, 721 NW 9th Ave., Portland OR

“On the three-mile uphill walk on the two-track pathway into Jawbone Flats, a little boy in our group had picked up a lone feather. Soft as a suede buckskin jacket with brushed bands of dark brown, the feather bore a message from the unseen owl. Looking closer, we noticed a pearly brooch of fourteen tiny eggs attached to the vane.” — Marina Richie, Feathered Forest
